Biographical/Historical Note

The Hiddenite Center, Inc. is a folklife and cultural arts educational and exhibition center located in Hiddenite, North Carolina. A three-story Victorian house (built around 1915-1920 formerly known as Lucas House) has been restored to house galleries and offices. The Center is designed to afford experiential opportunities for Western North Carolina and serves as a prism to capture the energies contained within the area.

Scope and Contents

In 1985-1986, Doug De Natale and Mary Cenne McDonald completed fieldwork for the Hiddenite Center, Inc. in a Folklife Resource survey. From the forms, people interviewed possessed varying skills and talents - from splitting shingles to quilting to mountain music-making. The reason for this survey is unknown, but there seems to be many talented people in the area of Hiddenite, North Carolina.

Since not all sheets are dated with year, the sheets were left in the original order as found.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
