This collection offers a variety of legal documents of W. R. Gragg and others from Boone and/or Watauga County, North Carolina, dating 1844 to 1925. Gragg was at one time, the Mayor of Boone, the Watauga County Register of Deeds, and operator of an automobile livery.

Biographical/Historical Note

W.R. (William Roy) Gragg was born September 24, 1884, the son of Empsey Monroe and Rachel S. Whitehead Gragg. He married Martha Elmira Shook. Gragg served as Watauga County Register of Deeds from 1908 until at least 1918 and at one time was Mayor of Boone, North Carolina. He was also the operator of an automobile livery. Gragg died on December 25, 1928.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains receipts of W.R. Gragg as Boone Mayor and the Watauga County Register of Deeds (1905-1914); receipts to Gragg of Privilege Tax to operate an automobile livery (1915-1916); personal tax receipts (1911-1918, 1922, 1924); letterhead of Watauga Lumber and Furniture Co., Boone, North Carolina that lists Gragg as President; and original deeds. Persons named in the deeds include: Larkin Hodges, Joseph Hayes, Eliza Hayes, J.C. Trivett, Nancy Trivett, J.J. & Mary E. Coffey, W.C. & Carrie L. Coffey, Nathan Horton, J.G. Horton, N.N. This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

This probably came from Harvey R. Nickerson via Sanna Gaffney of the Watauga County Historical Society. An envelope dated October 7, 2002 is in the control file. Accession number AC.2002.055
