This collection consists of seven letters and an envelope from different politicians from North Carolina, kept mainly for their signatures. They date from 1919 to 1974.

Biographical/Historical Note

Kathleen Moore Morehouse was born January 29, 1904 in the Methodist parsonage at Oak Bluffs, on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. She graduated in 1924 from Mount Holyoke College and then worked for a time in a Boston publishing house. She married Robert Lang Morehouse in 1926 and they moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1929. Morehouse's first book, Rain on the Just was published April 1936, recommended by The Book-of-the-Month Club for a Pulitzer prize.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains letters with signatures of seven different political figures from North Carolina, dating December 27, 1919 to May 7, 1974. It includes F.M. Simmons, US Senate; O.Max Gardner, NC Govenor; Josephus Daniels, American Ambassador to Mexico; Clyde R. Hoey, US Senate; Dan K. Moore, NC Governor; Sam J. Ervin, Jr., US Senate; and Jesse Helms, US Senate.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

The donor of this collection is Kathleen Morehouse (Mrs. Robert) in September 1976. She gave them to Al Corum at the time. Accession number AC.2003.005
