Abstract:

This collection consists of six handwritten, very delicate and fragile lists of real estate properties with owners' names, number of acres, location of properties, and amount of tax owed per year on said properties. One lists lands and lots returned as Delinquent in the County of Morgan and the other list with names is one of lands and lots which were certified for sale in 1840 to the Sheriff of Morgan County, but which were not sold by him, shewing the amount due upon each tract up to that year. Years listed are 1840 to 1845.

Biographical/Historical Note

Morgan County, West Virginia was formed in 1820 from parts of Hampshire and Berkeley Counties and named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, an American Revolutionary War soldier.

Scope and Contents

This is a collection of real estate tax lists of Morgan County, West Virginia which are delinquent for at least five years (1840-1845) and a list of property to be sold to the Sheriff of Morgan County because the taxes were delinquent. Property owners, location of property, annual amount of taxes due, and the name of who paid the taxes are listed on most pages. Some pages are without owner identification.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
