This collection consists of a single, 16x27.5 double-sided page of deeds of partition and conveyance of lands (other than deeds of trust made to secure the payment of debts) in the county of Alleghany, Virginia during the year 1872.

Biographical/Historical Note

Alleghany County, Virginia was established on January 5, 1822, from parts of Botetourt, Bath, and Monroe counties. It was named for the Allegheny Mountains, in which it is located. During the Civil War, the iron for the CSS Virginia (Merrimac) came from Longdale Furnace in the county. Regiments from Alleghany County were at the surrender at Appomattox. Its county seat is Covington, Virginia.
