Biographical/Historical Note

John T. Morgan was a merchant in or around Lynchburg, Virginia. Business licenses also indicate that Morgan owned a business in Bedford County, Virginia. He may have had a business partner named H.C. Morgan, as that name appears on several receipts. Additional biographical information could not be ascertained.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains receipts of purchased goods from several different distributors, bills of lading that Morgan paid to the Norfolk & Western Railroad and Southern Express Company for transportation of goods purchased, receipts of tobacco sold, and a list of distillery goods prepared for John T. Morgan. There are also two business licenses, for 1883 and 1884. One folder holds handwritten orders for J.T. Morgan and several requests that a named person be given a specified amount of credit to be added to J.T.'s account. Receipts date from 1880 to 1886 and a day book of accounts for 1876-1877 is also included.


These papers are arranged into subjects then arranged chronologically per folder.
