The Newspaper Clippings Scrapbook of Lucy W. Craig is filled with clippings on various topics of the 1950's mostly from West Virginia newspapers. A few pages in the back are copies of loose clippings.

Biographical/Historical Note

Lucy Craig listed her address in the front of the scrapbook as Buffalo, West Virginia, where she was born. Lucy was the great-great-great-great niece of George Washington. She worked as a school teacher and with her sister Mary Craig, was the historian of Buffalo. Life Magazine published an article including information about the Craigs, entitled If Washington Had Become King.

Scope and Contents

The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings mostly from West Virginia newspapers, with inspiring thoughts of the day, historical occurrences of the area and nation, lots of articles concerning George Washington facts and history, cartoons, and columns by Charles Connor. Those articles dated are between 1950 and 1953.


This collection consists of two items, one circa 1950 and one undated.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
