Biographical/Historical Note

Newtown Producing Company was located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and operated between 1905 and 1915. Among its inventory were ginseng seeds and baby chickens. The letterhead of the company says it was growers and exporters of Ginseng.

Other companies in this collection are H.A. Schoenen and Belt, Butler Company, both of New York. The newletter from H.A. Shoenen indicates it was a broker for cultivated ginseng, as the price list for all grades of ginseng is listed.

Belt, Butler Company's letter gave Mr. J.F. Carter of Elkin, North Carolina an evaluation on his sample of cultivated ginseng in 1916. This company's letterhead reads Exporters of Raw Fur and Ginseng.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence to prospective ginseng cultivators in North Carolina, from Newtown Producing Company of Pennsylvania and Belt, Butler Company of New York. Another exporter, H.A. Schoenen of New York, produced a newsletter/price list in 1915 explaining its policies, procedures, and prices. Also there are three articles explaining the intricacies of growing and care of ginseng, dated 1908-1916.
