The Rufus Burks Papers collection contains about 100 letters from and to Rufus Burks and family members while he was serving in the US Army. Other folders contain family tax receipts and other receipts and paper pertaining to life in the 1940's.

Biographical/Historical Note

The letters from Burks while in service during World War II details some of the rigors of Army life, his medical treatment for an injury to his leg, the effects of separation of soldiers and family, and a picture of a black soldier's life and treatment during World War II.

Scope and Contents

The Rufus Burks Papers follow a black World War II private's life, largely stationed in the South, with extensive details on his family and their circumstances. Burks entered the US Army in 1943 and was stationed in Indianapolis, Camp Pickett, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, and Ft. Benning, Georgia. There are also letters to Burks' children, mother, and other family members. Letters/statements from Ms. Burks' doctor and pastor tell of her health problems and ask for his early discharge to help with family members. The tax receipts are for various Burks family members and their real estate and/or personal property in Botetourt County, Virginia.
