Abstract:

This collection includes one handwritten court summons for John White and Annanias McCoy, written by Jonesboro Clerk of Court Francis A. Ramsey, and to be delivered to the sheriff Robert Houston of Knox County in the Territory South of the Ohio. The summons was issued September 24, 1792 August 15th, 1792 and calls John White and Annanias McCoy to appear at the courthouse in Jonesboro on February 15, 1793. Also included in this collection are two photocopied typed transcripts of the same letter.

Biographical/Historical Note

Annanias McCoy and John White were land speculators in what is now East Tennessee in the late 1780's and 1790's and early 1800's.

Francis Alexander Ramsey was the Clerk of Court who issued this summons. His was one of the earliest families to settle the area that would become Knoxville, Tennessee. Ramsey was a founding trustee of Blount College, now the University of Tennessee.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of one handwritten orginal and two photocopied typed transcripts of a court summons for John White and Annanias McCoy. The summons was witnessed and signed by Francis A. Ramsey on August 15, 1792; issued on September 24, 1792; received in Knox County on October 24, 1792; executed on October 26, 1792; and signed by sherrif Robert Houston on October 27.
