Biographical/Historical Note

John Reuben Branscomb was born on August 12, 1863. He began his practice as a medical doctor in 1899 at the age of 35 after graduating from Tennessee Medical College at Knoxville (now part of the University of Tennessee system). He served the Blue Ridge communities of Virginia and North Carolina for 69 years. He died on June 1, 1969 at the age of 105 and is buried in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Carroll County, Virginia.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the correspondence of Dr. John R. Branscomb of Cabell, Virginia, dating 1889-1927. Also included is the advertisement booklet of I.O. Woodruff and Company, Manufacturer of Freligh's Tablets (Cough and Constituent), a letter to Dr. John R. Branscomb of Cabell, Virginia giving patient instructions for this remedy, along with a corresponding envelope, dated September 1899. Some business receipts and bank documents are also included.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

The Freligh's Tablets items were purchased from Bookworm & Silverfish in November 2003 and accessioned as AC.2003.052. The origin of the Branscomb Papers portion of the collection is unknown. It was accessioned as AC.2000.003.

Processed by Anita Elliott, April 2013. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
