This collection contains correspondence of James Sweet regarding a 1930s birth control study in Watauga County, North Carolina conducted by Lena Gilliam Hilliard, copies of related birth control articles, Sweet's handwritten notes, and an interview questionnaire filled out by Hilliard's husband, Ernest Hilliard.

James S. Sweet lived in Boone, North Carolina and later moved to Silver Spring, Maryland.

Scope and Contents

James Sweet corresponded with several people in different areas during his research of the 1930s birth control study/experiment in rural Watauga County, North Carolina. Included in this collection is his interview questionnaire of Lena Gilliam Hilliard's husband Ernest about Ms. Hilliard's role in the study. Several handwritten research notes of Sweet's are also included in this collection. Sweet has included copies of journal articles and his personal research notes.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
