Daniel M. Carlton as a Civil War soldier from Stony Fork, Watauga County, North Carolina. He was wounded on May 12, 1864 and died two days later on May 14, 1864.

Scope and Contents

This diary contains almost daily entries detailing the life of a Civil War soldier in combat. It mentions several other men's names, maybe also Watauga residents, that he meets on the battlefield. The last entry is from a friend R.A.S. who tells that Daniel received a mortal wound on May 12, 1864 and died May 14, 1864. He extends his sympathies to the friends of Daniel and apparently saw that they received his diary.

A letter from the donor, John L. Morehead, describes his acquisition of the diary and his transcription of it.
