Biographical/Historical Note

This diary of Joseph Gordon Greenwood reveals that he came from Surry County, North Carolina, reporting to duty at Camp Jackson, South Carolina on May 27, 1918. On July 31, 1918, he and others in the Company L of the 323 Infantry sailed from New York bound for France. He details some of his experiences, good and bad, while serving in France, and tells how he felt when coming home in June, 1919. Greenwood died in 1968.

This collection is a journal of one World War I soldier, Joseph Gordon Greenwood of Surry County, North Carolina, and his one-year tour in France. He briefly describes almost daily life in the service and some of the experiences he had while on the boat and in France. It ends when he reaches good old U.S.A. soil.
