Biographical/Historical Note

The letterhead of this letter reads The American Association, Limited with an address of London, England, Alex A. Arthur, Manager. Arthur tried to interest the Richmond and Danviolle Railroad in establishing an iron production operation in the Cumberland Gap area, but failed. He then attempted this through investors organized as the American Association, Limited, and formed the Knoxville, Cumberland Gap, and Louisville Railroad. The Knoxville Southern Railroad, for which this letter was probably an invitation to its groundbreaking, was incorporated in June 1887.

No details were revealed about J. Chamberlain, Esquire, Arthur Chester Master or G.R. Eager.
