Abstract:

The Patricia Duane Beaver Papers contain a wealth of information about the conferences she attended, research on Appalachia, some family and personal mementos of travels as well as books, journals and oral histories relating to Appalachian Studies.

Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. Patricia D. Beaver was Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Center for Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. She retired in 2013.

Dr. Beaver has conducted research in Appalachia and China, with particular interests in community, family, and public policy as well as issues related to gender, class, and ethnicity. She has taught courses in the Anthropology Department, many of which overlap with Appalachian Studies, Asian Studies and Women's Studies. She was project director of the Appalachian Land Ownership Study (discussed in Who Owns Appalachia, University Press of Kentucky 1983), co-editor with Burton Purrington of Cultural Adaptions to Mountain Environments (University of Georgia Press, 1984), author of Rural Community in the Appalachian South (Waveland, 1996), co-editor with Carol Hill of Cultural Diversity in the US South (forthcoming 1998, University of Georgia Press). Her recent research focuses on cultural and ethnic diversity in Appalachia, with attention to the African American and Jewish communities in Asheville, N.C., on Melungeon history and identity, and on rehistoricizing gender and ethnicity.

Her areas of research/interest are Appalachian culture, social organization, gender, cultural diversity, Chinese gender issues, contemporary culture, culture in the American South, impacts of public policy on rural families, gender and family organization, race and ethnicity; Appalachia, China.

Scope and Contents

The Patricia Duane Beaver Papers collection covers a span of 1900 to 2013 and includes some personal family history such as membership in the Ku Klux Klan, some genealogy records and clippings, clippings of the Presidential visit to Ashe County, North Carolina in 1998, along with proceedings / reports from conferences attended and travel to Wales. The media series includes copies of oral histories relating to history of South Wales and a few books and journals relating to Appalachia and China. It is a very diversified collection. Series III contains her notes/syllabi, papers, and readings from courses taught at Appalachian State University over her career, such as ANT 1215, 1510, 4120, 5120 and AS 4550, 5020, and 5530.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into five series, sorted and arranged per subject, then folders put in alphabetical order. Series include: Papers, Meetings, Correspondence; Books, Journals, and Media (with Media being moved to Series V; Appalachian State University Courses-Syllabi and Notes; Photographs; and Beaver's Projects-Addendum (added in 2014).

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

Patricia D. Beaver donated this collection on August 2005, with additions made October and November 2005. The collection was accessioned as AC.2005.034. More materials were donated in 2014.

Processing Information

Processed by Anita Elliott, June 2013. Materials for Series III were processed in October 2013. Audiovisuals were processed in 2014. The collection processing was completed December 2014. More additions will be forthcoming. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
