Biographical/Historical Note

Southern Railway was a US class 1 railroad and the product of nearly 150 predecessor lines that were combined, reorganized, and recombined beginning in the 1830s, formally becoming the Southern Railway in 1894. The Railway merged with Norfolk and Western Railway in 1982 and was renamed Norfolk Southern Railway in 1990.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
