The Reverend Doctor Goodridge Wilson Papers is a collection of Dr. Wilson's correspondence and research of several Virginia counties' history, along with a bibliography of his library and several black and white photos of the area and local people.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Rev. Dr. Goodridge Wilson (1887-1976) was a respected Presbyterian minister and historian. He was the author of the Southwest Corner Column in the newspaper Roanoke Times and the author of the History of Smyth County.

Scope and Contents

The Reverend Doctor Goodridge Wilson Papers contains correspondence and research papers about several counties and areas in Virginia, including Floyd, Giles, Grason, Roanoke, Rockbridge, Russell, Tazewell, and Washington Counties, plus more. There is a copy of the bibliography of Dr. Wilson's personal library, along with mementos of Emory and Henry College, photographs of Virginia people and landmarks, and research about the lumber business in Virginia.


This collection is loosely arranged by subject and/or county of interest, if applicable, and the folders with correspondence are arranged by date. Dr. Wilson's file names/subjects were used if possible.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
