Guide to the Appalachian State University Oral History Projects, Audio Materials and Papers, 1971-2002, undated

Summary Information

Title: Appalachian State University Oral History Projects, Audio Materials and Papers, 1971-2002, undated
Collection: AC.669
Extent: 37.75 linear feet (47 single cassette boxes, 12 double cassette boxes, 2 index card boxes, 1 half-manuscript, 2 flip-top CD boxes)
Abstract:

The Appalachian State University Oral History Projects, Audio Materials and Papers Collection is a mixture of audiocassettes from several oral history projects, conferences, and events, dating in the 1970s-1980s, some of which have been positively identified as to which project the interview is related while others are not. A few transcriptions, CD copies, and duplicates are also part of this collection.

Creator: Appalachian State University

Biographical/Historical Note

Several oral history projects have occurred over the history of Appalachian State University, especially in the Appalachian Studies field. While some of the cassettes in this collection have been clearly identified as the ASU Oral History Project, the Black History Project and a study from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, a big majority has no clear markings of the parent project. It is believed that most interviews occurred in the 1970s, and names have been attached to the interview cassette. When transcriptions have been completed, more interviews will be assigned to their respective projects.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains a variety of interviews and information related to the Appalachian region. Included are numerous cassettes with interviewee/interviewer files and a subject index reference of interviews, music, etc tied to the Appalachian State University Oral History Project in the 1970s. Also included are Appalachian Studies conference materials and field recordings of traditional music. Most oral histories reference the Appalachian region although a few discuss Appalachian State. A few cassettes are indentified as part of a Black History Project as well as an oral history project by the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

Audiocassettes were numbered prior to being accessioned and this numbering system was maintained. At the time of accessioning, there was not a complete set of numbered audiocassettes and those numbers that were not included in the collection have been so noted in the container list. The original cassettes have been ordered by number and are separated from duplicates, with a list of interviewees and available related information placed in the Control File. Duplicates, although not a complete set, have been numbered and boxed by number. Boxes 50 and 51 contain a card catalog of the collection and a subject index, supplying interviewee/inteviewer/tape number and other information.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in five series, primarily by project, and then audiocassettes are arranged by number within series. The series are: Series I: Appalachian State University Oral History Project and Related Projects Audiocassettes; Series II: Black History Project Audiocassettes; Series III: University of North Carolina at Asheville Oral History Project Audiocassettes; Series IV: Morris Harvey College Publications Audiocassettes; and Series V: Duplicate Audiocassettes. The user copies that are available are located as a subseries within the larger series.

Administrative Information

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

The collection was transferred from the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection open stacks and accessioned as AC.2012.007. Little to no documentation of the ASU Oral History Project has been discovered, though it is clear that this was a separate project from the Appalachian Oral History Project (AC.111). Many of the cassette tapes are not part of the ASU Oral History Project, but are recordings of music, folklore, lectures, and events including an Energy Conference in the 1970s. Several blank cassettes had been numbered with the collection and were discarded prior to accessioning.

Processing Information

Processed by Anita Elliott, September 2014. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
