Biographical/Historical Note

The Center for Appalachian Studies is a unit within the College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina that was established in 1978. Its faculty and administrators are charged with the development, coordination, and facilitation of curricula and programs dealing with the Appalachian region. It encourages community members to understand the social and cultural implications of their choices as permanent or part-time residents. The programs supported by the Center invite international participation to understand the special needs of mountain regions, culturally and environmentally.

There are currently three concentrations for Master of Arts degrees in Appalachian Studies: Appalachian Culture, Appalachian Music: roots and Influences, and Sustainable Development. There is also a Graduate Program offering an On-campus Graduate Certificate in Appalachian Studies, an Online Graduate Certificate in Appalachian Studies, and a Graduate Minor in Appalachian Studies.
