Biographical/Historical Note

The Sow's Ear Press began operations in Abingdon, Virginia in 1987 with founding editors Errol Hess, Larry Richman, and Nell Maiden. The Sow's Ear gave rise to a writer's group in the 1980's to the present, including James Owens, Ann Richman, Suzanne Rhodes, Judy Miller, Kristin Zimet, Sam Rasnake, and many others. At Richman's retirement as editor, Kristin Zimet took the job and moved the operation to Donalds, South Carolina. The Sow's Ear publishes the Sow's Ear Poetry Review, and sponsors two annual contests - the chapbook competition and the poetry competition. Judges are poets with national reputations.

Scope and Contents

Larry and Ann Richman were among the first editors of the Sow's Ear Press in 1987, and this collection comprises most of their correspondence with poets who submitted poems and contracted for publication with Sow's Ear Press until the Richmans' retirement in 2003. Included also are samples of submitted poetry for the annual contests, some business correspondence of the company, two boxes of galleys and edits of galleys of chapbooks before publication, and a collection of photographs, black and white and color, of poets and associates, some used in the publications, most unidentified and undated.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into five series: Business Correspondence and Records, Correspondence with Poets, Poets' Papers, Galleys of Poetry Books, and Photographs. Within each series, the folders of correspondence are arranged chronologically and the other folders, alphabetically.
