This collection consists of World War II letters mostly from Private Terah (Terrah) Harris to his wife Clara. [Terah spelled his name both ways in signatures.] There are a few diaries of Clara's before she married him, and a Lutheran serviceman's book.

Biographical/Historical Note

From all indications, Private Harris was from Hickory, North Carolina. His wife Clara lived in Hickory while he served overseas in Belguim and France.

Scope and Contents

In this collection, one will find almost daily correspondence from a veteran of World War II to his stateside wife. From the letters it is known that he served 1942-1945, and was stationed overseas in Belguim and France. His wife Clara lived in Hickory, North Carolina during his time of service. There are also letters from family members and acquaintances, one of which is also an Army wife. Also found in this collection are Clara's personal diaries from 1935-1941, with snippets of her daily life activities. There are 13 v-mail letters sent to Clara from Terah, as well as 170 letters and cards.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
