Biographical/Historical Note

Thorton Tayloe Perry, Jr. served in World War I as a pilot and in World War II, as Provost Marshall of London. He served as Postmaster of Charles Town, West Virginia for several years. Perry was an avid collector of history and books. Upon his death in 1981, parts of his incredible library went to the Charles Town Library, the Virginia Historical Society, and the Shepherd College Library. He collected items relating to Jefferson County, West Virginia, including items about John Brown and Harpers Ferry, Civil War Generals, and West Virginia secession, among other topics.

Scope and Contents

This collection is part of a correspondence and photograph collection of Thorton Tayloe Perry, Jr. from Charles Town, West Virginia. This collection includes some military papers and his personal correspondence. It also includes a 45 rpm record of Bumpsy Start and Claire Lily singing I'm Headed Back to West Virginia and Don't Buy the Liverwurst. User and archival CD copies are also in the collection. Because Perry served in World War II as Provost Marshall of London, many of his 1947 Christmas cards are from old Army buddies and acquaintances.


The collection is arranged chronologically. The originial 45 rpm record, user CD and archival CD copies
are located in Box 2.7.

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

The provenance of most of this collection is unknown. The 1963 letter from Ernest J. Wessen about rare books and Douglas Bennett's death was purchased from Bookworm and Silverfish in 2010. Accession numbers AC.2000.006 and AC.2010.009

This collection was processed by Anita Elliott, January 2014. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
