Abstract:

The Sketches of Early Watauga collection contains 20 original sketches by Dr. Margaret 'Peggy' Polson of Watauga County, North Carolina. The sketches depict early homes, businesses, and scenes, all dated 1972 and published in 1973.

Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. Margaret 'Peggy' Polson is a retired Appalachian State University professor of Art, currently living in Iowa. Polson has donated many of her original art pieces as well as works from her personal collection to the Appalachian Turchin Center for the Visual Arts in Boone, North Carolina.

Scope and Contents

All sketches are signed and dated P. Polson '72. Scenes of Watauga County, North Carolina depicted in the sketches include the Daniel Boone Cabin Monument, Winebarger Mill, Mast Farm, E.F. Lovill Home, the 1904 courthouse, Three Forks Baptist Church, Saw Mill at Shull's Mill, Tweetsie Railroad, J.H. Councill Home, F.A. Linney Home, Mast's Store of Valle Crucis, Tatum Cabin, Valle Crucis Mission: The Church of the Holy Cross, W.L. Bryan Home, Hardin Home: Trailway Farm, the 1889 jail, Blowing Rock, Watauga Academy, Judge L.L. Greene home, and the 1906 administration building.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
