The Donald Askins Papers on Appalachian Mining Operations collection houses many slides, photographs and maps of the mining operations in Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia, with indexes included with the photos and slides.

Biographical/Historical Note

According to the 2008 interview, Donald Askins, an Alabama native, taught at Clinch Valley College in Wise, Virginia, then moved to being the first Executive Director for the Appalachian Coalition, whose main focus was the elimination of strip mining. He is responsible for taking the aerial photographs of the mining operations in this collection in 1977 through 1979 as documentation of the effects of strip mining. Later, he pursued a criminal law degree and was elected Commonwealth attorney in 1991 untill 2000.

Scope and Contents

The Donald Askins Papers on Appalachian Mining Operations primarily contains slides related to strip mining, topographic maps indicating trip mine activities, and still photographs. The time period of the slides, photos and maps is 1954 to 1977. Two papers written by Askins and maps are included. There is also an interview with Askins done on August 20, 2008 at his home in Clintwood, Virginia by Pat Beaver, Fred Hay and Sandy Ballard.

Arrangement

The papers of the collection are foldered and filed chronologically. The photos and slides remain in the groups in which they were donated, indexed according to notes on individual slides, if any. The maps are arranged alphabetically by quadrangle name.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
