Biographical/Historical Note

Zebulon Baird Vance (1830-1894) was a commander of the 26th North Carolina Infantry in the Civil War (1861-1862); Governor of the Confederate State of North Carolina (1862-1865); Governor of North Carolina (1877-1879); a United States Congressman, and a United States Senator.

In his letter to Col. Samuel M. Tate of Morganton, North Carolina, he speaks of the railroad officials having him under fire and asking to speak to Tate before he makes some important decisions. I have a great deal of talk, for you, on public and personal matters, says Vance.

Col. Tate (1830-1897) was a Morganton, North Carolina native, attained the rank of lieutenant colonel in the 6th North Carolina Regiment during the Civil War, and was wounded several times during the War. Before and after the war, he worked for the Western North Carolina Railroad Company.

Scope and Contents

This collection is a one-page handwritten letter from Zebulon B. Vance, Charlotte, North Carolina, to Col. Samuel M. Tate, Morganton, North Carolina, September 29, 1868. In the letter Vance is asking Tate for a meeting to discuss public and personal matters. A separate item is an authenic autograph of Z.B. Vance, N.C.. Vance was the Civil War Governor of North Carolina.

The letter was definitely purchased from L&T Respess Books in 2010, and a note on bib record says the autographed was purchased. Accession numbers AC.2010.097 and 098

This collection was processed by Anita Elliott, December 2013. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
