This land grant is to James B. Bentley from Arthur I. Boreman, Governor of the State of West Virginia, with a survey description for 175 acres in McDowell County, dated June 10, 1868.

Biographical/Historical Note

Arthur Ingraham (also spelled ‘‘Ingram’’) Boreman (July 24, 1823-April 19, 1896) was West Virginia’s first governor (1863-1869). He was was born in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, and moved with his family to Middlebourne, Tyler County, while still an infant.

In the 1870 Census of McDowell County, West Virginia, James B. Bentley is recorded as an illiterate farmer, 36 years old with a wife and three children. This deed in 1868 was not his first land grant. in 1860 he secured land on the Tug River in West Virginia, and also in 1868 he obtained an additional 85 acres on Cub Fork.

Scope and Contents

This collection is one 12x18 mostly handwritten land deed from Arthur I. Boreman, the first Governor of the State of West Virginia to James B. Bentley, a farmer. The survey describes the boundaries for 175 acres in McDowell County, for which Bentley paid $3.50 on June 10, 1868.
