The Loyd Franklin Miller and Ola Mains (Miller) Papers is a collection of correspondence and other papers, with letters written between 1925 and 1932 between the couple who later married.

Biographical/Historical Note

Mr. Loyd Franklin Miller (1905-1986) lived in the Meat Camp community of Watauga County, North Carolina, and Miss Ola Mains (1899-1957) lived in the Tamarack/Pottertown area, Watauga County, North Carolina in the early 1920's. From their letters dated 1925-1932, they courted in person maybe on the weekends, and by written word, once or twice weekly. They eventually married, living out their lives in Watauga County.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence between a courting couple, Loyd Miller and Ola Mains between 1925 and 1932. There is also two letters to Ola from her cousin in service in Hawaii, Sgt. Lloyd R. Potter, dated 1928. Other items in this collection include thirteen World War I Stereographs photos (color), a 1925 edition of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles statutes, a copy of the October 1945 newspaper, The Southern States Cooperative Farmer (located in Oversize ACSC Box 2), and a few other items.


The correspondence has been arranged chronologically.

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

This collection was donated by Evelina Miller Idol in 2010. The donor requested that if a local museum serving the communities of Meat Camp and/or Tamarack/Pottertown (NC) is developed, these letters would be placed in that museum. Also, she requested that no copies be made of these letters. Accession number AC.2010.053

Processing Information

This collection was processed by Anita Elliott, January 2014. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
