Biographical/Historical Note

The Penland School of Handicrafts (or Crafts, as it is called now), located in Penland, North Carolina, about 50 miles from Asheville, is rather well-known for its marketed and exhibited handcrafts over the last 80+ years. Founded in 1929 by Lucy Morgan as an economic development project, today Penland School encompasses about 400 acres with more than 1,200 people receiving instruction each year.

This collection is a manuscript describing the Penland School of Handicrafts (or Crafts, as it is called now), located in Penland, North Carolina, near Asheville, and dated 1949. The school was established in 1929 by Lucy Morgan to help area people develop their crafts and strengthen the economy. Today more than 1,200 people receive crafts instruction at Penland. The author of this manuscript is unknown.
