Biographical/Historical Note

The Wallen family were moonshiners in the late 1890s and early 1900s Tennessee mountains. Helton describes their somewhat primitive way of life, and Babe's elaborate moonshine distillery. Much of his research/knowledge came from his Great Aunt Coony Wallen, who died in 1978, having lived almost 100 years.

Scope and Contents

This collection is an eleven-page typed manuscript by O. C. Helton, relating the family history of his ancestor Uncle 'Babe' Wallen. The manuscript details the history of the Wallens, O.C. Helton's family, and their moonshining business in the early 20th century.
