Abstract:

The National Railway Historical Society Papers is a collection of a commemorative postcard of the last day of the Roanoke, Virginia Convention of the Society, September 5, 1977, with its special postmarks and railroad stamps.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society was established in 1955, and has been active in preservation and restoration of historical rail equipment, documentation and structures, maintaining a fleet of passenger cars and diesel locomotives, and sponsoring rail excursions.

The Chapter works together with three other organizations in the Roanoke Valley, the Virginia Museum of Transportation, the O. Winston Link Museum, and the Norfolk & Western Historical Society, all the while promoting the Roanoke Valley as a rail destination. Indeed, these groups, along with the Blue Ridge Chapter and the C&OHS, have had the Commonwealth of Virginia designate this area as Virginia's Rail Heritage Region.

Scope and Contents

This collection is one postcard advertising the last day of the National Railway Historical Society Convention in Roanoke, Virginia on September 15, 1977. It has three special railroad stamps and special postmarks commemorating the Society and Convention.
