Biographical/Historical Note

In Renfro Valley, Kentucky in the 1930's, John Lair stayed busy producing and emceeing radio programs such as the National Barn Dance, the Renfro Valley Barn Dance, and the Renfro Valley Sunday Morning Gathering, now known as the Renfro Valley Gatherin', the third oldest continually broadcast radio program in America. Lair was the first permanent emcee of the Gatherin' and did so until his death at age 70 in 2008. Lair was also a songwriter and harmonica player, writing over 500 songs, one being Freight Train Blues which was recorded by Watauga County native, Doc Watson and others.

Jess D. Wilson is a well-known research of Rockcastle County, Kentucky genealogy. He has written several books, one of which is Revolutionary War Veterans in Rockcastle County, Kentucky.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains copied stories, bits of books and articles, and handwritten notes and memories about families and happenings in and around Rockcastle County, Kentucky. It is likely that most of the notes were written by Jess D. Wilson.
