This collection includes two copies of the same photograph of the home of John and Nan Mast, located in the Cove Creek community of Watauga County, North Carolina, his new 1914 Ford car, and several other folks named on the backs of the photos.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Ford car was one of the 3 first cars in Cove Creek community (NC). They were shipped by railroad to Shouns, Tennessee. A man from the factory came with them, drove the cars to owners, showed them how to drive the cars, and then on his way home. These cars were hand cranked, had carbide head lights.

Mast family members and other individuals in the photograph include: John Mast (brother of J.C. Pete Mast), Jast Mast, Clyde Corum, Nettie Greer, Cleo Mast (wife of Clarence J. Mast), Nan Mast (wife of John H. Mast), Nora Mast (daughter of J.C. Mast), and Clarence J. Mast (oldest child of J.C. and Nora P. Mast).

Scope and Contents

This collection is two copies of a photograph of the home of John Mast, brother of J. C. Pete Mast, with his 1914 Ford car in foreground. John Mast standing on side of car, Clyde Corum, farm hand standing at front of car. On steps of house, left to right: Nettie Greer, Cleo Mast, Nan Mast (wife of John), Nora Mast, Clarence J. Mast. Also a letter from Ruth Currie thanking Mrs. Wilson for her donation to the Appalachian Collection is included.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
