Biographical/Historical Note

Archibald Mains Kitzmiller (1811-1886) lived and worked in Harpers Ferry, Virginia at the time of John Brown's raid in 1859 and was taken prisoner in this raid, and later tried to negiotiate a truce for Brown with his opponents. Thee legal documents of this collection dated prior to the raid, for a debt of Kitzmiller's of ten dollars that went unpaid as promised in 1847.

Scope and Contents

This collection includes autographed documents by Archibald Mains Kitzmiller, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. There is a warrant summoning Kitzmiller to Jefferson County for debt, July 19, 1851. There is also a promissory note for the preceding debt, February 20, 1847. Kitzmiller was chief clerk at Harpers Ferry Arsenal, taken prisoner by John Brown in his raid.
