Guide to the Philip B. Michael Ledger and Papers, 1855-1904, undated

Summary Information

Title: Philip B. Michael Ledger and Papers, 1855-1904, undated
Collection: AC.798
Extent: 1.0 linear feet (1 medium flat box)
Abstract:

This collection contains a ledger of a business, dated 1970-1886, with handwritten rental leases and recipes in the back, along with three folders of loose papers taken from the ledger.

Creator: Michael, Philip B.

Biographical/Historical Note

Although not conclusive, the Philip B. Michael in this collection was probably John Michael's son and Elizabeth Michael Guzeman's father. Philip was administrator of both their estates (see back of ledger).

The ledger shows many entries relating agricultural and general store items, so it is assumed that the business held both kinds of products. Payments came in cash, work, and livestock. Many of the newspaper clippings related to agricultural home remedies and recipes for treatments of humans and animals.

Philip also rented a house on a yearly basis, as there are several rental agreements both inside the back of the ledger and loose.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains Philip B. Michael's ledger and papers from an unnamed business in Bruceton, West Virginia, dating 1855-1904. The ledger's entries are dated 1870-1886, and include some recipes/remedies and rental leases written on the back pages. Found loose within the ledger were other rental leases, listings of the estate of John Michael, of which Philip was administrator and items were sold at auction in 1876. Also found were many newspaper clippings of agricultural interest, remedies for various conditions in man and animal, and other topics.

Arrangement

Within the one collection box are three folders of loose papers and the ledger.
