The John Gwinn Papers is a collection of receipts, loan notes, purchase lists, land deals, deeds, and lawsuits, and estate papers, dating 1866-1868. John Gwinn was a Justice of the Peace in Greenbrier County, West Virginia.

Biographical/Historical Note

John Gwinn (1790-1873) lived in Greenbrier and Fayette Counties of West Virginia. He served as Justice of the Peace in Greenbrier County in the late 1860s. Breckenridge Gwinn, mentioned in one folder and several papers, was John's son. Other sons, John G., Laban and Lockridge, are also mentioned in some of John's papers.

Scope and Contents

Although named for John Gwinn, several Gwinn family members are part of this collection: John's sons, John G., Laban, Lockbridge, and Breckenridge. There are many legal papers related to money issues and land ownership, as well as purchases, loans, tuition, and other topics concerning dealings of a family. John Gwinn was Justice of Peace in Greenbrier County for at least 1866-1868, and issued several summons for persons for varying instances, including one man fathering a bastard baby and fleeing the state. One folder deals with the legal issues of John Gwinn's estate. Gwinn died in 1873.
