Collection: AC.821
Extent: 86.25 linear feet (83 boxes)
Abstract:

The Highlander Center Records contains information about the Highlander Research and Education Center in New Market, Tennessee as well as materials related to the Appalachian region, mostly gathered for a land study in the early 1980s. Also included are articles, papers, legislation information, and other materials about coal mining and other natural resource utilization and abuse.

Creator: Highlander Research and Education Center (Knoxville, Tenn.)

Biographical/Historical Note

The Highlander Center began in 1932 in Monteagle, Tennessee as the Highlander Folk School, founded by Myles Horton, Don West, Jim Dombrowski, and others, focusing first on organizing unemployed and working people, training union organizers and leaders, and fighting segregation in the labor movement. Workshops and training sessions at Highlander helped lay the groundwork for many Civil Rights movements, including the Montgomery bus boycott and the founding of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

The center played a role in organizing and supporting anti-strip mining and worker health and safety efforts. It has become a supporter of grassroots groups fighting pollution, toxic dumping, and anti-globalization movements.

In 1972 the Highlander Research and Education Center moved to its current location near New Market, Tennessee and today continues to fight for justice and equality, social justice, and diversity.
