Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. Marvin Donley Hart was born in Ashe County, North Carolina in 1907. He was self-educated and earned degrees through correspondence school. Raised as a Primitive Baptist, he was a Southern Baptist minister for forty plus years in Ashe County, Maryland, Tennessee, and Virginia. He served in the North Carolina General Assembly for Ashe County, as well as conducted a singing school and printed books about his family, his sermons, and Wilburn Waters.

Scope and Contents

Dr. Marvin Donley Hart Papers and Audiocassettes contain books, audiocassettes, and correspondence, with the cassettes being a combination of his sermons, special singers or groups attending his church, or prerecorded gospel music for his friends, the Bowles. Per the dates on the cassettes, he mailed each week's sermon/talk and gospel music to the Bowles, most with notes which are found with correspondings numbers in folders. Some books from Dr. Hart's collection are filed with the collection as they have personalized messages/notes. The Library has copies of each book as part of its collection. There are also several reel-to-reel recordings.

Arrangement

The cassettes are numbered by date in 14 boxes with the papers/envelopes that wrapped them originally filed chronologically in folders in boxes 1-3. The reel-to-reels and books are in separate boxes.
