This collection was created by Eva Hicks and contains recordings of her family featuring North Carolina mountain music, ballads, and storytelling. She is the daughter of Floyd Hicks.

Biographical/Historical Note

Frank Proffitt (1913-1965) lived in Beaver Dam area of Watauga County, North Carolina. He was a tobacco farmer, carpenter, and maker of fretless banjos and dulcimers. He also loved and learned old songs and ballads. He authored "Hang Down Your Head, Tom Dooley."

Anne and Frank Warner were close friends with Frank Proffitt, who contributed more than 100 songs to the Warners' collection.

Lee Monroe Presnell (1876-1963) was a traditional folksinger from Beech Mountain, North Carolina.

Nathan Hicks was a singer and maker of musical instruments. He was Frank Proffitt's father-in-law.

Buna Presnell Hicks, wife of Roby Monroe Hicks (1882-1957), lived in Watauga County, North Carolina, and they were the parents of Rosa (Rosie) Hicks Presnell, Gordon Andrew Hicks, and Linzy Washington HIcks.

Scope and Contents

This collection of recordings spans over 40 years and includes the families of Hicks, Presnells, Proffitts, and others singing and telling stories. Eva Hicks, daughter of Floyd Hicks, collected these ballads and stories from the 1940s to the 1980s. Names of some of the singers/players are: Frank Proffitt, Nathan Hicks, Rosie Presnell Hicks, Roby Hicks, Lee Monroe Presnell, and Linzy Hicks, among others.

The cassettes are arranged in the order of which they were numbered.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
