This collection consists of the papers of Cyrus C. Babb, who was a civil engineer, born in Maine, who lived in North Carolina, after working on various hydroelectric projects throughout the United States, circa 1930s. The papers are contained in six notebooks.

Biographical/Historical Note

Cyrus C. Babb was born in Portland, Maine on June 18, 1867. He graduated MIT in 1890 and began work with the United State Government as a surveying engineer. According to his resume in Notebook #1, in 1928 he was the Senior Hydraulic Engineer in the US Corps of Engineers. Babb was the engineer in charge of surveying the US Reclamation Service's St. Mary Irrigation Canal in Montana which siphoned water from the St. Mary River into the Milk River to irrigate land. The town of Babb, Montana is named in honor of his accomplishment. Babb was one of the founders of the Geological Society of Washington, as listed in the 1893 publication by GSW.

Scope and Contents

The Cyrus C. Babb collection contains papers from six notebooks in which he kept correspondence, maps, reports, comparisons, and such on various hydroelectric projects throughout the United States during the early twentieth century. He may have been a consultant from his home in Granite Falls, Caldwell County, North Carolina in the 1930s, as much of his correspondence and reports are stamped with that address.


The papers were removed from binders, remain in the original order, and are numbered 1-6.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
