Abstract:

This collection consists of two account ledgers, thirty color photographs, and a small amount of correspondence relating to Helton Woolen Mills of Helton, Ashe County, North Carolina, dating 1917-1935.

Biographical/Historical Note

These two ledgers with papers are linked to Helton Woolen Mills Company, manufacturers of Wool Yarns and Hosiery, and dealers in General Merchandise, Helton, Ashe County, North Carolina. They show accounts for individuals as well as businesses, dating 1917-1935, along with the business bank account with the Bank of Ashe in each ledger. According to notes in the collection, the mill was built in 1894.

Scope and Contents

In these ledgers are found business accounts listed by persons' names and business names, for transactions at a mercantile dated 1917-1925 . Surnames such as Elliott, Littlewood, Weaver, Mabe, Pennington, Francis, Ball, Blevins, Perkins, McClure can be found in the accounts. Payments are listed as paid by cash, trade/barter or work.

In Ledger #1, the mercantile's bank records with the Bank of Ashe for the years 1918-1922 are recorded on the back pages, along with a February 1920 inventory. Statistics of yarns for 1918 and 1919 are found in a Public School Tablet filed in a folder in Box 1.

In Ledger #2, the inventory of September 5, 1923 and January 1, 1925 are located in back pages, behind the Bank of Ashe account for December 1922-1931.

The thirty color photographs of the mill are located in Cold Storage. Some photos have notes on the backs.

Arrangement

Due to size, each ledger is housed in a box, each with a folder of correspondence and papers found within the ledger.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

This collection came from Ruby Lanier after she received it from an Appalachian student. It was accessioned as AC.2005.055.
