This diary collection is from Frances Wilson Osborne of Bristol, Tennessee and dates from the 1920s and 1930s. Her great-grandson transcribed some entries to a typed format with personal notes included.

Biographical/Historical Note

Frances Wilson Osborne (1851-1940) married G.W. 'George Washington' Osborne in January 1867. Both were originally from Sutherland, Ashe County, North Carolina. He was an ordained Southern Methodist pastor at Sutherland Methodist Church in Ashe County around 1867. At one time 1908-1910, they owned a boarding house in Damascus, Virginia. They lived in Bristol, Tennessee from the late 1910s to their deaths.

Scope and Contents

This collection of Frances Wilson Osborne consists of three diaries and an autograph book covering years 1908-1940, along with assorted small clippings and loose papers. Also included is a letter from 1924 to Frances "Frankie", from her brother W. A. Wilson, who was living in Japan; a 3-page excerpt from William Albert Wilson's diary from "Neighbor to Neighbor"; and a copy of "Year Book and Minutes of the Japan Mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, printed 1927, covering 1886-1926. Ms. Osborne's great-grandson and donor of this collection transcribed entries from the 'A Line A Day' diary. These diaries reflect Ms. Osborne's thoughts, remembrances, happenings in her life and others, and bring to mind life in the early twentieth century.


All diaries and papers are in one box in alphabetical order.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

This collection was donated and partially transcribed by Ms. Osborne's great-grandson, Glenn N. Holliman in 2010. It was accessioned as AC.2010.041.

Processed by Anita Elliott, March 2014. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
