Biographical/Historical Note

Stephens Store in Creston, North Carolina was operated by J.S. Stephens Sr. and his son, Joe Spencer Stephens, Jr. from the early 1920s until 1998.

Scope and Contents

J.S. (Joe) Stephens Store Ledgers and Papers includes ledgers, correspondence, digital photographs, and business licences for a country mercantile store where one could buy just about anything necessary for life from the 1920s to the 1990s. It was even an automobile service station that sold farm equipment, seeds and livestock feed. Located in Creston, North Carolina, Stephens Store served as a hub for rural life - sometimes even lending 25 cents up to ten or fifty dollars to be added to the person's bill or "put on the book/tab" until times when the person had some money to pay the debt. Housewives would send small grocery lists by whomever was going by the store to get a few needed items that would be charged for a few days, months or years. Included also are digitized photographs of the old and new Stephens Store, along with the owners. Some correspondence was also removed from the ledgers, along with newspaper articles from 1982-1983 about escaped convicts who took refuge at the store for a period of time.
