The Jack Wilson Coffey Collection of Deeds and Legal Documents contains 17 land deeds of North Carolina land deals and 16 other legal documents, including Confederate Army papers and receipts, dating back to 1793, including some original land grants with surveys.

Biographical/Historical Note

Jack Wilson Coffey was born on February 29, 1912 in Caldwell County, North Carolina to Lawrence H. Coffey and Ada May Costner Coffey. He attended North Carolina State University. Coffey died on September 2, 1995 in Laurinburg, Scotland County, North Carolina. He had at least one child, Amanda C. Demarest.

Scope and Contents

This collection includes 17 deeds/indentures and 16 other legal documents from 1790s to the 1900s, including Confederate Army papers and receipts, dating back to 1793, including some original land grants with surveys. All of these materials were collected by Jack Wilson Coffey. The original State of North Carolina Land Grants with surveys include: #304, May 10, 1849, 25 acres in Caldwell County to William Green; #1637, December 5, 1798, 250 acres in Wilkes County to John Lund; #1651, April 2, 1788, 150 acres in Wilkes County to John Lund; #5526, March 31, 1832, 25 acres in Burke County to Reuben Webb; and #5640, January 31, 1833, 50 acres in Burke County, later registered in Caldwell in 1873, to Wyatt Richmon.

Arrangement

Most of these papers are oversized so all are included in one large flat box, arranged in chronological order, except for the land grants (at end) and the smaller papers (in an envelope).

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

This collection was donated by Hal and Amanda C. Demarest of Panama City, Florida in 1999. Amanda is the daughter of Jack Wilson Coffey. No accession number is associated with this collection.
