Biographical/Historical Note

Roger Howell grew up in the Mars Hills area of Madison County, North Carolina, surrounded by traditional banjo and fiddle tunes music played by his neighbors. Influenced by the music of Flatt & Scruggs, Porter Wagoner, and the Grand Old Opry, he played in the "flailing" banjo style and won several awards for his playing. Traditional mountain music is his favorite music style, and he has produced and documented many field recordings of local fiddlers, including Woodrow Boone. He also spends time repairing and restoring violins. Howell recorded this collection of over 300 fiddle tunes, his "Memory Collection," in 2007.

Scope and Contents

In January 2007 Roger Howell began working on recording his "Memory Collection" of fiddle tunes.  Recording was completed in October 2007, and the end result was 13 discs and 350 tunes. Also with the collection is a copy of Howell's biography, "The Traditions Continue: A History of Music in Madison County, North Carolina," and a list of the songs included on the CDs.
