Biographical/Historical Note

Mazie Jones Levenson was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Walter Jones of Boone, North Carolina, whose homeplace is now known as the Jones House. As indicated in a newspaper clipping copied from the March 26, 2008 Watauga Democrat, Mazie became a teacher in Guilford County, and received a public health Master's degree from the University of North Carolina.

Her brother Jay (John Walter Jones, Jr.) served in the U.S. Marine Corps around 1937. Most of the photographs and the scrapbook chronicle this time in his life. John Walter Jones, Jr. was born on May 17, 1915 and died on December 16, 1938.

Scope and Contents

Photographs and other materials in this collection largely document the experiences of John Walter Jones, Jr., a U.S. Marine and the brother of Mrs. Levenson's, in China circa 1937. A panoramic photograph and a booklet titled "Trail Builders" commemorates a J. W. Jones's experience in the Civilian Conservation Corps Co. 426. Jones's scrapbook of his China Marine experiences in 1937 remains intact as he identified most faces/places in his black and white photos.

This collection is contained in one flat box. The photos and scrapbook are basically from the same time period, and photos have been identified as much as possible.
