The Tweetsie Railroad Collection contains photocopied inventory and equipment retirement records of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad Company dating 1916 to 1941, several Tweetsie Railroad brochures and souvenirs, and two scaled oversize drawings of the railroad company's car #15, undated.

Biographical/Historical Note

East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad was chartered by Tennessee legislature in 1866 and it began operation from Johnson City, Tennessee to iron mines in Cranberry, North Carolina in 1882, extending its service to Boone, North Carolina in 1919. Tweetsie Railroad with the original steam locamotive Engine No. 12 opened for business in 1957 and is celebrating its 58th year of special entertainment for the whole family in Boone, North Carolina.

Scope and Contents

The Tweetsie Railroad Collection includes photocopied records, 1916-1917 inventory of railroad holdings, and a small amount of correspondence. Tweetsie Railroad brochures, signs and bumper stickers, and two scaled, detailed drawings of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad Company's car #15 are also part of this collection.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

This collection was purchased from Row by Row Bookshop in 2009 and accessioned as AC.2009.031.
