Biographical/Historical Note

Published in Abingdon Virginia, The Plow was an independent newspaper designed to address the issues facing Appalachia. The articles and opinions it printed were often controversal.

The geographic focus of the paper was on the mountain regions of southwest Virginia, east Tennessee, and western North Carolina. It was published monthly from October 1975 until June 1978 and then bimonthly from June 1978 until August 1979 when it suspended publication, never to resume. The Plow's more notable regular columns included "The Furrowed Brow" on political issues, "Shellrock Farm" which provided recollections of subsistence farming, reader's comment section, and an "Old-Tool Quiz."

Scope and Contents

The collection consists mainly of photographs relating to published articles. The photographs include images of regional events, industry and manufacturing, mining, farming, crafters, local communities, and the area's natural landscapes. The collection also includes numerous photographs relating to several political, economic, and social controversies in the Appalachian region such as strip mining, coal miner strikes, Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area, Virginia Creeper Trail, and work place safety. In addition to the photographs, the collection also contains Plow bumper stickers, Plow Stationery, and a March 1961 issue of The Southern Planter.

Arrangement

This collection is organized into five series based on content. These include Series I: Identified Articles; Series II: General Photographs; Series III: People; Series IV: Subject Files; and Series V: Artifacts. Each series is arranged either chronologically or alphabetically depending on content.
