Abstract:

Charles Beaver (1913-1999) was an Asheville native, WWII veteran, employee of the American Enka Corporation, and participant in a large number of WWII reunions and commorative events. This collection includes materials relating to his life and work including photographs, documents of his army service, and correspondence.

Biographical/Historical Note

Charles Beaver (1913-1999) was an Asheville native, WWII veteran, employee of the American Enka Corporation, and participant in a large number of WWII reunions and commorative events. Beaver attended Asheville High School (1926-1930) and Wake Forest University (1933 and 1947-1948). Following graduation, he was employed at the American Enka Corporation in Asheville North Carolina until 1976 when he retired as head of labor relations.

He was drafted into the US army in 1940 and rose to the rank of captain before being discharged following the end of the war. During the post war period he served in the Army reserves, retiring in 1967 at the rank of Colonel. He was primarily associated with the 100th Infantry Division. After the war, Beaver was also active in the 100th Infantry Divsion Association and attended numerous reunions and commemorative events.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains the papers of Charles Beaver. It includes items relating to his service in the Second World War, time in the Army Reserves, education, employment at the American Enka Corporation, personal documents, and his active participation in various WWII reunion and commemoration groups.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into eight series: Series I: Army Service; Series II: School Materials; Series III: American Enka Corporation; Series IV: Financial Records; Series V: Personal Documents and Correspondence; Series VI: World War Two Commemorative Materials; Series VII: Audiovisual Materials; and Series VIII: Artifacts. The files within each series are arrranged chronologically by the earliest document present in each folder. Undated materials are located at the beginning of the series and are arranged chronologically based on contextual information.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

This collection was donated by Patricia D. Beaver in the Spring of 2002.

Processing Information

Processed by Zachary Hottel, October 2014. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
