Abstract:

The Susan Lea Jennings Papers consists of scholarly articles, newsclippings, and copies of historic documents focused on the social history of women in the Baptist Church. The articles are primarily focused on Baptists in the southeastern portion of the United States.

Biographical/Historical Note

Susan Lea Jennings is a librarian and scholar on the history of the Baptist Church. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1987 and Master of Arts in History in 1998, both from Appalachian State University. In 2007 she received a degree in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Tennessee. Jennings worked as an archival assistant for the International Mission Board- Southern Baptist Convention in Richmond, Virginia and as a Lead Services Librarian and Assistant Professor at Appalachian State University. She is currently the Dean of Library Services at Chattanooga State Community College.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of scholarly articles, copies of historic documents, and theological newsletters related to the role of women the Baptist Church collected during the course of Jennings' research for her thesis. Included in the papers are copies of Southern Baptist Convention Annuals from 1891 to 1931.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

The collection was donated by Susan Lea Jennings on June 4, 2003.

The collection was processed and finding aid generated by Trevor McKenzie, November 2014. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
